4to (28.5 cm), XVI, 120 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. "The discovery of silver in the mid-19th century proved critical to the development of San Francisco and Los Angeles, where its riches would build mansions, luxurious hotels and exclusive clubs, and create a social elite that demanded silver goods. Soon silversmiths emerged to produce elaborate objects for the wealthy and wares for the emerging middle class as well. The eight lavishly illustrated essays presented in this handsome book are sure to captivate collectors and historians." (from the publisher's description).
