Item description from seller

SILURIA A HISTORY OF THE OLDEST ROCKS IN THE BRITISH ISLES BY SIR RODERICK IMPEY MURCHISON 1867 UNCUT. Here is another of the pioneering works of geology from the times of Darwin and his peers, titled: Siluria. A History of the Oldest Rocks in the British Isles and Other Countries; with sketches of the origin and distribution of native gold, the general succession of geological formations, and changes in the Earth s surface, by Sir Roderick Impey Murchison. This large and rather thick hard cover book (6 ¼ x 9 x 2 ¼ inches, 566 pages plus a section of 41 plates and their explanations, and finally, 32 pages of Mr. Murray s General List of Works) was published by John Murray of London dated 1867, and the Fourth Edition (so noted on the title page). There is a map contained in a pocket (probably never taken out) on the rear endpaper Geological Map of the Silurian Rocks . The book is bound in finely textured maroon boards with gilt decorations on the cover and gilt titles on the spine. The book is well illustrated although I am unable to tell you how many illustrations there are as the book is uncut, sometime both top and leading edge and thus I cannot open the pages. Condition: As doubtless you can imagine, because the book is entirely uncut, it is in very good, even near fine condition. The hard covers are clean and bright with just some light bumping to the corners and spine tips. The spine is faintly faded and there are some very minor smudges to the finish of the rear board. Inside, the book is unmarked except for the bookplate of the library of the noble family in Rome, Italy at whose estate sale I acquired in it in 1978. The interior pages are clean and without toning or foxing while the General List of the Publisher s works is toned as it seems to have been printed on a different quality of paper. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. Language: ENG.
