‘There are huge gaps in our understanding of the lives of the Silures … Despite what is in many instances a glaring lack of evidence, I’ve increasingly become convinced that trying to tease out what we can about the social structure of these people offers one of our best avenues to understanding them better.’
Silures explores exciting new discoveries and changing interpretations to give an up-to-date analysis of the Iron Age peoples of south-east Wales.
From ‘the study of stuff’, new evidence of trade and commerce and archaeological discoveries, to the suggestion of a new research agenda and a consideration of Silurian resonances in modern Wales, Ray Howell’s insights are based on personal observations and his own research activities, including excavations in the Silurian region.
About the Author:
Ray Howell has recently retired as the University of Wales Professor of Welsh Antiquity. He holds BA, MA and PhD degrees and is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. He has directed numerous excavations and has contributed to archaeological programmes on the BBC, Discovery Channel, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, S4C and Smithsonian Channel, as well as on Channel 4’s Time Team. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This new book combines the latest discoveries with Professor Howell's decades-long study of the Iron Age in Wales to provide a new understanding of the Celtic peoples of South Wales. Readers will encounter a complex and sophisticated society and will then see how that society responded to the Roman invasion and occupation of their territory before considering the nature of the post-Roman world which followed. Professor Howell concludes by outlining a new programme of research, building on recent discoveries, which can take us even further in understanding these fascinating, if at times, enigmatic people.
