Silly Billy by Margaret Howell, pictures by Caroline Sharpe. Scholastic Book Services, 1973. Paperback. Perfect Condition copy. Description Offered here is an exceptionally well-preserved example of this delightful 1970s children's picture book. This is the 1973 Scholastic Book Services (U.S.) paperback edition (Star Line/core library edition), featuring the iconic watercolor illustrations by Caroline Sharpe that perfectly capture the story's whimsical, folk-tale charm. The book is in truly Near Fine to Fine / Perfect condition — far better than typical for a mass-market Scholastic children's paperback of this vintage. No writing, no inscriptions, no stickers, no tears, no creases, no spine stress, and pages remain bright and clean. The binding is tight and square. Covers are fresh with vibrant colors and minimal shelf wear. This appears unread or very gently handled — a collector's or gift-quality copy. Story Summary: There was once a boy called William. Everyone called him “Silly Billy,” but his mother believed he would one day be a rich man. Sent to serve the King as baker, tailor, and stable boy, Silly Billy’s clumsy mishaps (dropping currants in the bread, sewing gold buttons on the back of the coat, decorating the horse with red ribbons) unexpectedly please the King, who rewards him with a gold ring, a gold chain, and a bag of gold. The tale ends happily as William finds love and fulfills his mother’s prophecy. A warm, cumulative story celebrating kindness, optimism, and finding value in “silliness.” Ideal for ages 4–8, early readers, and fans of gentle folklore-style tales. Author: Margaret Howell (British children’s author active in the late 20th century; Silly Billy is one of her noted works, originally published in the UK). Illustrator: Caroline Sharpe (renowned for her warm, expressive watercolor illustrations of children and whimsical scenes in 1970s British and American children’s books. Her style here blends rich colors, lively character work, and charming period details — highly sought by collectors of mid-century/modern-vintage illustration. Publisher: Scholastic Book Services, New York (U.S. edition / school market). Publication Date: 1973 (copyright 1971 for text and illustrations). Format: Paperback, approx. 28 pages, full-color illustrations throughout plus black-and-white accents. ISBN: Not issued (typical for this Scholastic period). Condition: Near Fine / Perfect (see photos and full description). Dimensions: Standard Scholastic paperback size. Notes: Includes the full Scholastic imprint, copyright page text (“Text ©1971 by Margaret Howell. Illustrations ©1971 by Caroline Sharpe”), and the “TW 2562” code visible on the cover. This matches the U.S. Scholastic distribution of the 1971 Longman Young Books UK original. Why Collect This Edition? Silly Billy is a charming example of 1970s children’s literature, bridging UK and U.S. publishing with Scholastic’s wide reach into schools and homes. Caroline Sharpe’s illustrations are a highlight — colorful, expressive, and full of life, evoking a fairy-tale world of kings, bakers, tailors, and happy endings. Copies in this superior condition are increasingly scarce, as most Scholastic paperbacks saw heavy use in classrooms or by young readers. Perfect for: children’s literature collectors, fans of Caroline Sharpe’s artwork, 1970s nostalgia, homeschooling/early reading collections, or as a special gift. A timeless story that reminds us that what others call “silly” can lead to great fortune and happiness. This is a lovely, heartwarming book that has charmed generations. Don’t miss this pristine copy.…
