Print on Demand. This book presents a history of the mysterious rapping phenomena that captivated the attention of the United States in the mid-19th century. The author traces the history of these rappings from their origins in Western New York to their rapid spread across the nation and provides firsthand accounts of the experiences of those who witnessed and communicated with the rappings. In addition to investigating the circumstances and spread of the phenomenon, the author provides a historical overview of spiritualism, engaging with both the claims of skeptics who viewed the rappings as a hoax and the genuine belief of spiritualists who saw them as a form of communication from spirits of the dead. Ultimately, the book provides an in-depth look at a fascinating moment in the development of the spirit communication movement, offering insight into the beliefs, motivations, and social and cultural implications of this widespread phenomenon. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- ESP and Psychic Phenomena
A historical look at 19th‑century spirit rapping, clairvoyance, and the investigations that followed.
This historical account surveys early spiritual phenomena, including clairvoyant messages, spirit communications, and public investigations from the United States during the 1800s. It presents reports and testimonies from those who explored and debated these experiences, framing a shift in how such events were understood in science and theology.
Readers will encounter vivid scenes of séances, clairvoyant demonstrations, and the ways communities discussed and debated what they called manifestations. The material emphasizes the claimant side of these experiences and the context in which they were investigated, reported, and debated in the press and by scholars of the era.
- Accounts of clairvoyant messages and their described sources, including notable figures and doctors of the time
- Descriptions of séances, demonstrations, and shared testimonies across different cities
- Connections drawn between spiritual phenomena and contemporary scientific interests
- perspectives on how these events shaped local and national conversations about the supernatural
Ideal for readers of historical inquiry into spiritualism and 19th‑century public life, and for those interested in how early investigations framed the era’s turn toward modern thought.
