[ ABOUT THE BOOK ] The Siege Book by Russell Braddon | The Siege by Russell Braddon recounts the British campaign against Baghdad and the siege of Kut el Amarah during the winter of 1915-16. After an unsuccessful attempt to capture Baghdad, General Townshend held the settlement with 10,000 combatant troops against a larger force of Turkish and Arab conscripts. The siege lasted 147 days, marked by endurance, starvation and disease, before Townshend surrendered. | Braddon documents the political and strategic decisions behind the campaign and describes the conditions endured during the siege, including the desperate scarcity of food in its later stages. He also follows the consequences of the defeat: the survivors' forced march into captivity, the deaths among British and Indian troops, and the heavy casualties suffered by a relief force sent to assist Townshend's division. The account draws on first-hand testimonies and includes the differing experiences of Townshend and his fellow officers during their imprisonment. (SP).…
