This lovely map of Sicily was engraved by Englishman Isaac Basire sometime around 1740 and is based on an earlier work by Andreas Cellarius. It labels primary towns, provides rudimentary topographic details, and features an inset map showing the relationship between Sicily and the African coast. Mt. Etna is also prominently shown, both within the map and in the attractive decorative title cartouche. In Greek mythology, the forges of the Olympian god Hephaestus were said to be found under the mountain - possibly a reference to the metalworking scene in the foreground. Sheet Width (in) 13.25 Sheet Height (in) 9.1 Condition Description Creasing along fold lines and faint offsetting visible. Soiling and wear along the outer edges which do not affect the image.
