The history is centered in Boston, 'the cradle of liberty,' and connects Savin Hill, Beacon Hill, Bunker Hill and Dorchester Heights with Brooklyn Heights, Yorktown, Plattsburg, Vicksburg, Santa Fe, the Little Bighorn River, San Juan Hill, Belleau Wood, Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Saipan, Normandy, Tokyo, Inchon, Khe Sahn, Kuwait, London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Moscow and Beijing. The closing chapter's heading, 'The Triumph of Multi-Ethnic America', encapsulates the book's theme.
