FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12mo, 178 x 100 mms. pp. xv [xvi blank], 128, contemporary tree calf, gilt spine, with the personal red morocco label "Elizabeth Mason" on the front cover; some very slight rubbing of binding, but a very good to fine copy. The non-subscribing Presbyterian minister John Mears (1695 1767) was born in Loughbrickland, Ireland, and was involved in some of the religious controversies there (no surprises). This short work was first published in Dublin in 1758 and was incorporated into his Forms of Devotion (1766). A supplement was published in the same year. The Monthly Review commented that "it is written in a very plain, easy, and judicious manner, breathes an air or serious and rational piety; and seems very well calculated to promote the purposes of practical religion."
