From this period the progrefs of the difeafe was varied according to the favourable or unfavourable changes in the air, the efl'eéls of which were vifibly perceived on the perfons of the fick and the number of new cafes which occurred. That portion of the city where it firlt appeared being almolt entirely aban doued, it gradually extended into molt of the compaét parts within the difiance of an hundred rods; but de creafed in the violence of its fymptoms and frequency of its attacks as the feafon advanced, and by the 14th' of Oétober it had fo far abated that the citizens began to return to their dwellings and refume their ufual oc cupadons.
