Synopsis: One of America's most controversial alternative publishers explains the sordid chapters of his troubled private life; Jim Goad was the publisher of the brilliantly misanthropic Answer Me!, the magazine that profoundly influenced grunge and alternative culture throughout the 1990s. (The seminal Suicide issue for instance was said to have obsessed Kurt Cobain and three British youths who all tried to contact Goad before taking their lives). He later wrote the widely acclaimed Redneck Manifesto, where he came to the defence of the white blue collar worker in America, before being imprisoned for beating up his girlfriend. Shit Magnet was written during his imprisonment, a reflection on the remarkable events that led to his success and downfall. Shit Magnet uses autobiographical vignettes to illustrate its central theme: guilt. How guilt is used to create scapegoats; how blaming and slaying the enemy has become history's propulsive force. Goad is only partially putting the reader on when he claims to have the miraculous ability to redeem others by absorbing guilt from them.
By examining his mischief-ridden childhood, he discovers how the idea of evil became imprinted on him at an early age. He covers all the violence in his life, both domestic and with complete strangers. He details his turmoil-filled career, up-to and including his time behind bars. Through it all, he searches for the reasons why he gets into so much trouble, and why the shit always seems to stick to him.
