"Shipping Sense" is a compelling examination of the American merchant marine and the vital role of maritime commerce in national prosperity. Written by Edward C. Plummer, a prominent figure in maritime regulation, this work provides a deep dive into the complexities of the shipping industry during a transformative era of international trade. The book addresses the economic and strategic necessity of maintaining a domestic fleet, analyzing the competitive challenges faced by American vessels in the global market.

Through a series of insightful observations and commentaries, Plummer explores the legislative frameworks, trade policies, and practical logistics that define the shipping business. He emphasizes the critical relationship between sea power and national security, arguing for a more robust and self-sufficient maritime infrastructure. With its focus on the logic and necessity behind shipping operations, the text serves as both a historical record and a persuasive argument for the protection of maritime interests. "Shipping Sense" is an essential resource for those interested in maritime history, transportation economics, and the foundational policies that shaped the American shipping industry in the early twentieth century.
