Item description from seller

Pp. [4], 5-528. Laden with full-page black & white photographs of the 1893 Columbian Exposition by James W. and Daniel B. Shepp. Decorated endpapers. Bound in blue cloth with lettering and flourishes stamped in blind and gilt on spine and front cover. Stains to front cover; wear to extremities of cloth; hinges reinforced with library tape (please see photo). In sum, a sturdy, presentable copy of one of the more luxe view books of the noted fair. The Columbian Exposition was a significant advancement in a multitude of ways, its detractors were there at the get-go. Despite its influence on the development of the City Beautiful movement, Frank Lloyd Wright was immediately critical: "By this overwhelming rise of grandomania I was confirmed in my fear that a native architecture would be set back at least fifty years."Enthusiasm for the fair has not abated, as the popularity of The Devil in the White City attests. Now protected with a removable, clear archival jacket.
