The author delves into Hardy's captivating characters and rustic settings, highlighting the novelist's mastery in depicting the complexities of human existence. Through an examination of themes such as fate, love, and social class, the book underscores Hardy's profound understanding of the human condition. It concludes by establishing Hardy's enduring significance as a literary giant whose works continue to resonate with readers today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

- Biography and Autobiography
What with spending several hours each week reading the latest news and plays that ripple with the amusement and intellectual life of London, New York and the Eng lish-speaking countries and towns for the past eight years, and personally viewing ninety dramas and operettas by both stock and road companies, I am almost ready to ven ture forth with an opinion on what makes the theatre look sick and unhealthy at the present date.
