From the Author: As a former history teacher and Shadow gunship pilot, I did not want Shadows of Saigon to be a dry history book. Therefore, I blended facts with some fiction to create a novel full of life based upon men and women who experienced this story of USAF Air Commandos conducting special operations in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War (called the American War by the Vietnamese).
After the American Incursion into Cambodia in 1970, 17th Special Operations Squadron AC-119 Shadow gunships, specially equipped for night operations, are assigned the task of providing round-the-clock close air support for the new Republic of Cambodia. Daylight missions pose extremely hazardous flying conditions for the Shadows. Ground and flight crews for the five Shadow gunships of Fighting C Flight stationed at Saigon's Tan Son Nhut Airport hump to meet the demanding and dangerous assignment.
Not all is flying and fighting, anytime, anyplace for the Shadows of Saigon because there is Paris of the Orient just outside the gates of Tan Son Nhut. Women are usually, not always, a part of men's lives and this novel upholds that observation. So I wrote this book with women readers in mind. The book is rich with historical and technical detail.
Whether you have or have not read about unconventional warfare, military special operations, fixed-winged gunships, the Vietnam War, or the Killing Fields of Cambodia; this book will enlighten you.
Thirty years pass quickly, but still we use past experiences to fight today's problems. Case in point, Afghanistan!
