Shadow and Light: An Autobiography (1902) is an astonishingly rich historical document from one of the most exceptional pioneers in nineteen-century America. Mifflin Wistar Gibbs’s account of his towering success as an African American businessman, newspaper owner, judge, and diplomat is a voluminous narrative of one man’s triumph despite the staggering racial inequalities of the time.

Born into a free black family in Philadelphia in 1823, the young Mifflin Wistar Gibbs demonstrated a precociousness as a writer and orator as young as 16 years old. Although involved in the black literary and political scenes in Philadelphia, Gibbs was disillusioned with the city’s racial inequality; He subsequently became involved in abolitionist activities, and was an active participant in the Underground Railroad. In his late 2o’s he was invited by Fredrick Douglas to speak on an abolitionist lecture circuit throughout New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. In 1850 Gibbs left for the west to seek a fortune in the California gold rush. By the late 1850’s he had built a successful business, and eventually established two black-owned newspapers in the Bay Area. When new discriminatory laws were passed in California, Gibbs moved to Victoria, where he became extremely successful as a businessman and a leader of the black community. Once the civil war had ended, he returned to the United States where he earned a law degree, moved to the south, and by 1873 had become the first African American elected as a municipal judge. From his beginning as a fatherless boy, to his post as an American diplomat, Shadow and Light is a stirring testament to the achievements of an extraordinary American pioneer.

About the Author

Mifflin Wistar Gibbs (1823-1915) was an American-Canadian diplomat, judge and lawyer. As a young man in Philadelphia he was involved in the abolitionist movement. In 1850 Gibbs migrated west during the gold rush, and became a successful businessman in California, and founded Mirror of the Times, one of the first Black owned newspapers in the country. In 1858 Gibbs moved to Victoria, where he prospered as a prominent community leader. In the 1870’s he returned to the United States, and became the first black man elected as a U.S. judge, and eventually became a the first African American diplomat.

You may use the attached model cancellation form, but it is not obligatory. You can also electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". If you use this option, we will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a cancellation on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.

To meet the cancellation deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right to cancel before the cancellation period has expired.

Effects of cancellation

If you cancel this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to cancel with contract.

We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

Exceptions to the right of cancellation
