In both "Time Release" and its sequel, "Shadow Image," I’ve tried to address the issue of human memory and how it’s used and abused by police, prosecutors and even psychologists.
Memories, especially traumatic memories, aren't mental videotapes. They're more like sand dunes. Hard edges erode. Fixed points move. People leave tracks. And even though eyewitness memories are dangerously unreliable, they underpin our entire criminal-justice system. It’s sobering to think how much that system relies on memory from traumatized victims and eyewitnesses, especially when you consider the dozens of capital convictions overturned in recent years after DNA evidence proved the accused killer innocent of the crime.
In "Shadow Image," memory expert Jim Christensen is drawn into the labyrinth of Alzheimer’s Disease and a complex web of lies created by one of Pennsylvania’s wealthiest and most powerful political families. The story begins when the family matriarch apparently attempts suicide just as her only son begins his ascent to the governor’s mansion. After examining the images the woman created in an art-therapy class, Christensen is convinced she is recalling a secret that could topple her family’s dynasty.
New York Times best-selling author Michael Connelly says "Shadow Image hooks you quickly and yanks you right through to the last page," and suspense author Taylor Smith calls the story "gripping and disturbing...No reader will walk away untouched."
The story was inspired by the Alzheimer’s plight of former President Ronald Reagan and the question: What if someone who knows a lot of secrets can no longer control their memory? Imagine how dangerous that person becomes.
