Print on Demand. In this poignant and intimate novel, the author delves into the complexities of poverty and family dynamics in the early 20th century. Set in rural Scotland, the story follows Basie Dow, a young girl forced by circumstance to become the guardian of an ailing grandmother, an infant, and the home they share with a troubled mother. Faced with tremendous adversity, Basie's resilience, compassion, and determination are tested as she navigates neglect and abuse while striving to create a haven for those in her care. The author's vivid depiction of Basie's struggles and triumphs shines a light on the strength of the human spirit, the power of love, the impact of societal ills, and the enduring bonds that sustain us even in our darkest times. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
