Large octavo, 870pp., illustrated. A fine, fresh, unread copy in the publisher's full deep blue goatskin leather, tooled in gilt, with marbled endpapers, gilt compartments, and all edges gilt; one of 45 copies of the deluxe issue bound thus, this being number 3 (of a total of 1,225 copies in various bindings). Housed in the publisher's navy cloth slipcase, alongside a string-bound pamphlet in wrappers, entitled "Publishing the Oxford Text of The Seven Pillars of Wisdom," by Jeremy Wilson. That pamphlet, which is SIGNED by Wilson, is one of 100 copies issued, and bears the limitation number which matches the book (3). Wilson, a leading biographer of Lawrence and a fine press publisher, was the first to publish the long-awaited "Oxford Text" of Lawrence's "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom," in 1997. Much longer than the 1926 "subscriber's edition," the first to be published, it is in fact much closer to Lawrence's original manuscript; even more so than the 1935 "unabridged" edition, published soon after Lawrence's death. In order to produce this edition, Wilson mostly drew from Lawrence's annotated copy of the so-called "Oxford Times" edition, essentially a mock-up or trial edition based on the original, lengthy manuscript, which was produced for Lawrence in eight known copies and is one of the great unobtainable rarities of literature in the English language. Six years after Wilson published the long-awaited "Oxford Text," he made some modest revisions, including to punctuation and the spelling of Arabic names, and an Index was added (compiled by Hazel Bell). It is, as such, a definite scholarly improvement on the 1997 edition, and a crucial volume in any bibliographically complete Lawrence collection. While generally obtainable in the larger limitations, we have not traced a single copy of the full goatskin binding in the auction record since the year of publication. An exceedingly pleasing example.
