From the Author
This book was written by a group of Protestant feminist scholars as a much-needed "Introduction to Feminist Theology" for a wide audience. Written in a style that is both accessible to lay people and has academic integrity, this thought-provoking work covers the background and basics of feminist theologies which have been emerging over the last three decades.
This long-awaited volume includes the main critiques of patriarchal tradition, reclaimed stories of women, creative re-interpretations, and new visions for church and world. There are thirteen chapters divided into three main sections-- Bible, Theology, Christian Life. Each essay (see Table of Contents) relates back to the feminist consciousness and strategies laid out in Ch. 1. The book is a truly collaborative effort and a "group vision" in which all contributors read and commented upon each other's pieces along the way, and took part in a "Communion dialogue" of the last chapter.
SETTING THE TABLE includes a Study Guide and a Glossary of Terms, which are helpful to individuals readers, college students, women's groups, church groups, ministerial students, clergy, and others. This inspiring book provides a useful tool for all who want to understand the tension of being BOTH feminist and Christian, and want some sound ideas for dealing with that reality in the midst of traditions slow to change.
