Item description from seller

Hardcover in orange cloth lettered in black. 411 pp. A tight, about very good example, some soiling to the front cloth. Though typically not a reprint house, Macaulay issued this edition after the Moffat, Yard issue of 1912. Prev. own. stamp front and rear pastedowns and endpapers. A novel that explores the themes of love, betrayal and justice. The plot revolves around the story of a young woman falsely convicted of a crime and sentenced to life in prison. Over the years she gradually loses hope that she can prove her innocence and loses hope in the justice system. After a number of years, she encounters a sympathetic lawyer who provides a glimmer of hope. They investigate the lies and deceit that have kept her in prison. Interestingly (though with nothing actually to do with the book), the front pastedown has affixed to it a snapshot of three young women in a lake or stream with the hand written caption" Helen Partelow, Kthrtn Mulliken, Marion Partelow. In the Old Swimming Hole/ Sept. 5, 1927". The rear pastedown has affixed to it a similar vintage snapshot of a girl standing at an indoor tavern counter. …
