A Senior's Guide for Living Well and Dying Well is an effort by an engaged group of seniors to address most questions of aging. Dr. Hanson has taken the content from years of expert group presentations and condensed them into into a readable, unique, and accessible guide for seniors and their families.
He starts with aging well and covers retirement issues, physical and mental well being, driving, sleeping, depression, and fraud. The section on health care addresses our aging bodies, the capacity and limitations of healthcare systems, palliative and hospice care, end-of-life planning, dementia, and grief. A final section encourages one to leave a legacy beyond just money and property. Choosing financial and healthcare representatives, writing legacy letters, making wills, estate planning, memorial and funeral plans, organizing records, and conversations with loved ones are all covered.
Yet, the book's greatest value may be in the real-life stories included in many chapters. Stories of advance directives that worked well and not so well. Stories of healthcare and financial agents lasting for decades. And stories of dying persons making decisions right up to the end. This book will be valuable to seniors and their families as a reminder to think ahead, plan, and cherish the opportunity to be intentional as we age.

About the Author
A. Stuart Hanson grew up in Minneapolis, attended Washburn High School, Dartmouth College, and Dartmouth and the University of Minnesota Medical schools. He served in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam and Japan and practiced pulmonary and critical care medicine at Park Nicollet Health Services in the Twin Cities for forty-one years. During his medical practice years he has had over 4,000 conversations with patients and their families about end-of-life issues. He uses those experiences in writing this guide book for seniors and their families.
Dr. Hanson has held many leadership positions at Park Nicollet including medical director and president of the Park Nicollet Institute for Research and Education. He has served as president and board chair of the Twin Citties Medical Society, president of the Minnesota Medical Association, and as a Minnesota delegate to the American Medical Association House of Delegates. He was the founding president of the Minnesota Smoke-Free Coalition, Vice President of the Minnesota Health Data Institute, and vice chair of the Minnesota Partnership for Action Against Tobacco (renamed Clearway Minnesota). He is the current president of Behavior at Work Collaborative, Inc. which is dedicated to improving workplace culture.
He has previously written Do No Harm: A Personal Memoir. He lives with his wife in Minneapolis. They have two adult children.

Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Magers and Quinn Booksellers, Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A., without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
