About this Item
Engraved frontispiece, [28], 475p. [12]. Contemporary calf with a gilt ruled spine and red title label on the spine. Fourteenth edition. Six additional plates in the text. First printed in 1678 and frequently reissued. Brueggemann p652. Includes an interesting series of early American provenances. From the Library of David Deas (1722-1775) with his signature on the front blank. He emigrated from Scotland to Charleston in 1738. Also includes the signature of K. Motte which seems to match up with David Deas daughter Katherine (Catherine) (1753-1776). She married Col. Isaac Motte (1738-1795). The date 1776 is added after her name and records seems to indicate thats when she passed away. Col. Isaac Motte was a member of the Continental Congress as a representative from South Carolina from 1780 to 1782. He was also a delegate in 1788 to the state convention that ratified the US Constitution. Hinges a little weak, but holding. Scattered foxing throughout. Seller Inventory # 7184
