Sydney Shoemaker is a American Philosopher who has pioneer work in a variety of areas in metaphysics and philosophy of the mind. In this book he argues against the Cartesian view of the unity of the self, or personal identity, is due to or involves an immaterial unity. He argues against personal identity being based on physical factors and psychological factors. Great read for anyone into western philosophy and researching this topic.
