SECOND AMERICAN EDITION, published April 1806 by Robert McDermut and sold in his bookstore on Pearl Street in New York. Full brown leather binding; seven raised bands on spine; elephant folio - 16-3/8 in. tall X 11 in. wide; unpaginated. Good+ with worn corners and edges; hinges reinforced some time back and spine reinforced with lower left back spine separated about two in.; title page and the "Author's Address" wrinkled; title page has significant tape repairs but complete; interior pages toned, but in very good shape with an occasional corner bent; no marking apparent and no damp staining - remarkable for a 200+ year old book; some foxing on front and back pages, but again, interior pages devote of foxing. John Brown was a Scottish minister, born at Carpow in Perthsire. Self-taught with intimate knowledge of the ancient languages allowing him to read and translate old manuscripts written Latin, Greek and Hebrew. He was the minister of the Burgher branch of the Secession Church in Haddington for nearly 40 years. First published in Edinburgh, the work provides history, critical chronology and geography, summaries, explanatory notes, and reflections. Brown provides what he believes to be the only possible explanation of each verse and its practical lesson. The book was first publshed in the late eighteenth century and has been reprinted numerous times. This is a very early American example of this important Bible. This is oldest copy found currently available for sale at the time of the listing. (This book is quite heavy and will require some additional postage. Not available for International shipping.).…
