fabrizio Serra, 2011, pp. 176 -- Tommaso Campanella's Selection of Philosophical Poems (1622) brings together in powerfully dense, lyrical expression the encyclopedic thinker's sensism imbued with his idiosyncratic metaphysics, ardent anti-Aristotelianism, his radical alternative to Machiavelli's vision of statecraft, the championing of a return to Nature as the source of all knowledge, a proto-psychological self-assessment at the advent of the New Sciences, an authentic quest for spiritual consolation and religious conversion, and a unique "architectonic" poetics critiquing both the Petrarchism and mannerism in vogue in his day. With the publication of this volume, along with the companion volume published by The University of Chicago Press (2011), all eighty-nine poems of Campanella's Scelta are now available in English translation for the first time. With Campanella's original text in a facing-page format, this volume includes the poet's unabridged self-commentary, as well as critical annotations, provided by the editor and translator Sherry Roush.
