Item description from seller

The Legal Classics Library, 1990. 2 Volumes in 1. Burke, Edmund. Select Works. Edited with an Introduction and Notes by E.J. Payne. Originally published: Oxford: At the Clarendon Press, 1881. Reprinted The Legal Classics Library, 1990. 2 Volumes in 1. lxii, 328; lxx, 384 pp. Calf, decorative gilt stamping, raised bands, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, ribbon marker. Fine. $60. * Contents: Volume I. Thoughts on the Present Discontents; The Two Speeches on America. New edition with Additions and Corrections. Volume II. Reflections on the Revolution in France. An appealing compilation of Burke's principal works, including Thoughts on the Present Discontents, which treats the expulsion of Wilkes from Parliament and the value of political parties, the Speech on American Taxation, and the Speech on Moving Resolutions for Conciliation with the Colonies, which supported the cause of the colonists, and Reflections on the Revolution in France, a classic criticism of the revolution and its actors. Burke [1729-1797] is considered a founder of modern conservatism. This is true to some extent, but not quite. He believed in popular government and recognized the inevitability of change. Indeed, he believed that a state that could not adapt to change was a state doomed to failure.
