Zvi (Zevi) Scharfstein (1884?1972) was a transformative figure in American Hebrew education, widely regarded as a "teacher of teachers". Born in present-day Ukraine, he immigrated to the United States in 1914 after witnessing the violence of pogroms and the onset of World War I. Educational Philosophy and Impact Scharfstein was a pioneer of the "natural method" (Ivrit b?Ivrit), which advocated for teaching Hebrew through immersion, using it as the sole medium of instruction for all subjects. Prolific Author: He authored over 100 textbooks and hundreds of other publications, many of which became standard classics in Hebrew schools for decades. Cultural Bridge: His materials were specifically designed for American Jewish youth, often featuring stories that blended traditional Jewish values with American life to make the language relevant to a new generation. Institutional Leadership: He served as a professor of Jewish education at the Teachers Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary for over 40 years (1916?1960). Publishing and Literary Contributions Shilo Publishing House: In the early 1920s, Scharfstein founded Shilo Publishing House with his brother, Asher. This gave him the independence to produce specialized textbooks, dictionaries, and children's literature without external institutional constraints. Journalism: He was the long-time editor of Shevilei ha-?innukh, a leading Hebrew educational journal, and a frequent columnist for the Hebrew weekly Hadoar. Lexicography: He compiled several widely used Hebrew-English and English-Hebrew dictionaries, some of which are still in print.
