Add to basketGirard is a thinker (theologian, philosopher, biblical exegete, anthropologist, literary critic) who uses the insights of cultural anthropology to reinterpret the overarching themes of biblical narrative. The themes? Violence-the object of several of the prohibitions of the Decalogue and especially of the tenth commandment, in which there is a realization that coveting represents the pervasive violence of sinful human interaction. Frustrated rivalry leads to the identification of a scapegoat, usually weak or the outsider in the culture, whose sacrifice maintains cultural cohesion. Most of humankind's myths arise from this fundamental series of human mechanisms and social interactions. The Christian gospel reenacts this mythological pattern but also turns it inside out-told from the viewpoint of the Victim rather than the community that commits the sacrifice. Thus begins the unraveling ('Satan falling') of the murderous dynamics of sinful human societies. Girard's scrutiny of comparative religion ends up emphasizing the distinctness of Christianity and the radical uniqueness of Christ. His remarks on the role of Satan, on the nature of Christianity's ineffaceable stamp on Western culture, and on the significance of Nietzsche deserve the earnest attention that this book both arouses and requires. 199 pp.

The title echoes Jesus' words: "I saw Satan falling like lightning from heaven". Girard persuades us that even as our world grows increasingly violent the power of the Christ-event is so great that the evils of scapegoating and sacrifice are being defeated even now. A new community, God's nonviolent kingdom, is being realized -- even now.
