Item description from seller

FIRST EDITION, 4to, pp. viii, 204 + 36 fold-out engraved plates. Contemporary panelled calf, spine divided by raised bands, red morocco label. Foxed and toned in places, one leaf with a small paper flaw affecting a couple of characters. Rubbed, light stains to front board. Verso of title-page inscribed ?Balgonie 1737? and with armorial bookplate of the Earls of Leven, a couple of early (cost?) codes to front pastedown; purchase receipt from Hugh K Elliot Ltd dated 1965 loosely inserted. The first edition of this influential text on conic sections by Robert Simson (1687-1768), professor of Mathematics at Glasgow - using a geometrical approach, it engages with the work of Apollonius of Perga, whose surviving texts Simson edited and restored, though his lasting legacy was his edition of Euclid, long the standard. This work was reprinted in 1750 and translated into English later in the century when it became a school text, but this first edition is now scarce on the market. ESTC T70287.
