Paperback. Bobby Lee's dad departs for combat in World War II, leaving Bobby Lee and Mom to cope with townspeople believing he committed a murder immediately prior to leaving. Bullies, including the murder victim's son, make Bobby Lee's life a nightmare of rejection, harassment, and threats. Worse, a self-proclaimed Conscientious Objector pursues Mom romantically and hopes Dad doesn't return alive. Dad and Bobby Lee retrieved a dead animal from their water well Dad's last day at home. Father and son keep the incident secret but Bobby Lee discovers the abandoned well house harbors blacker, more deadly secrets. Bobby Lee's desperate efforts to clear Dad's name, rescue Mom, and free himself from bullies force him to fight for his life until a new dilemma he didn't see coming enters the fray.
