A study of the American Civil War must include a look at the men who made the policies that drove armies in the field. Secretaries of War is a multiple biography of the of men who led the War Department for both the Union and the Confederacy. The Secretary of War's responsibilities during the American Civil War included recruitment, training and supply of the army. This book fills a void in Civil War literature by closely looking at the men who were truly the tip of the spear.
The Secretary of War's responsibilities during the American Civil War included recruitment, training and supply of the army. The role also entailed managing prisoners and the distribution of weapons. To grasp the Union effort, understanding men like Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton and Simon Cameron is crucial. These men managed the military bureaucracy, revamped transportation/telegraph systems and pushed for Black recruitment. Confederate Secretaries of War managed a department responsible for army supply, and strategy. They navigated immense logistical challenges, resource scarcity, and tension with President Jefferson Davis.
