Synopsis
Conventional Schooling is shown to be a waste of time for students, parents and communities, while Education is revealed as a promising alternative. Schooling damages students, while Education uplifts them to become the best of themselves.
About the Author
Dr. Bernstein has been fascinated with education for over 60 years. It began at age twelve when he decided to find criteria for the best and worst teachers while in a Conventional sixth grade classroom and wrote about his findings. In his twenties he decided to study children at every age to prepare for a career working with children. He began by working in a nursery school, a children's psychiatric unit and a child guidance clinic. To become a teacher he spent a year at a teachers college, then worked as a teacher over the next years with students of nearly every age, including ones at elementary, high school, college, graduate school, and continuing education levels. He also helped begin and worked in alternative school situations that had blurry or no grade levels and gave no letter or number grades. Between teaching stints he worked as a social worker, elementary and high school guidance counselor, and psychotherapist. His academic training as an undergraduate was at University of Pennsylvania with a Masters from Columbia University Teachers College and a Ph.D. from University of Oregon. He loved growing up with his two daughters, Bobbie and Vauna, and his son, Arthur, as well as continuing to grow up with his grandchildren, Joseph and Joshua, as well as his son-in-law, Bob. After 25 years of exploring the world, he returned home to the village of Saranac Lake, NY, where he continues to be in private practice as a psychologist, lives with his wife, Meg, and continues to study how people learn best. He loves animals, floating around on water, bicycling, being outdoors, improvisation acting, fixing things, and working in useful jobs, like chopping wood, puttering, and helping people to heal themselves. He has been a teacher and learning facilitator for beings from three months to ninety years of age.
