A facsimile edition of this historical study of Cranborne Chase, privately printed from the 1818 second edition by Lieutenant General Augustus Henry Lane Fox Pitt Rivers, who in 1880 inherited a large portion of the estate. A facsimile reproduction of the second edition of William Chefin's 1818 work discussing Cranbourne - or Cranborne - Chase, a large area of countryside overlapping the boundaries of Wiltshire, Dorset, Hampshire and Somerset. This facsimile of the second edition was privately printed by Lieutenant General Augustus Pitt Rivers in 1886.With an illustrated frontispiece.A collection of early nineteenth century anecdotes relaying tales of fox and deer hunting, falconry and cock-fighting in the country, along with an discussion of excursions in Windsor forest. Providing a history of this ancient woodland, referencing battles between gamekeepers and poachers, and the keeping of ostriches in Windsor Forest in the 1750's.In 1880, Pitt Rivers inherited an estate of more than 32,000 acres in Cranborne Chase. With the bookplate of Alan Thornton to the front pastedown. In the publisher's original paper covered boards. Back strip head and tail detaching, with losses to paper. Closed tear to paper to back strip centre. Joints starting, with front board slightly tender and rear board firmly held. Marks to front board, most concentrated to board perimeters. Small loss of paper to centre of front board and head of rear board. Chipping to head of paper label to front board. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound.
