The rare final publication of the artist Bas Jan Ader, one of only 800 copies published to mark his attempt to sail single-handedly across the Atlantic. His boat was found off the coast of Ireland on 18 April 1976, and Ader was declared lost at sea. A Dutch conceptual artist and accomplished sailor, Ader was a minor sensation in the early 1960s, celebrated for his black and white photographs and silent movies, all of which featured him as the sole performer. In many of his films, Ader curated situations in which he had no or little control: sitting on a chair on a sloped roof until he fell or hanging on to the branch of a tree until his grip faltered and he dropped into a stream. Before embarking on his Atlantic voyage, the final part of a triptych entitled "In Search of the Miraculous", Ader arranged for 400 copies of this bulletin to be mailed to recipients and 400 to be made available at the Claire S. Copley Gallery in Los Angeles and the Groningen Museum in Holland; this copy, without folds from mailing, was likely a gallery copy. It contains a single image of Ader and his sailboat, Ocean Wave, and the musical score for the sea shanty "A Life on the Ocean Wave", sung by a choir as he set sail from Cape Cod on 9 July 1975. Single sheet folded once to form 4 pages (295 x 210 mm folded). Front page lettered in black, double-page spread with photographic illustration of Ader and his sailboat in black and white with lettering in white, rear page illustrated with sheet music for Henry Russell's "A Life on the Ocean Wave". Edges faintly toned, top edge lightly creased: a fine example. …
