Synopsis:

Bricklayer of the Soul records the reflections of those who have witnessed first-hand Irish-American abstract painter Sean Scully’s rise to international prominence. Born in Dublin in 1945, Scully has been described by the legendary art critic Arthur Danto as “belong[ing] on the shortest of short lists of the major painters of our time.” This unique book captures an astonishing range of voices and visions, featuring insights from his friend Bono to the celebrated novelist Colm Toibín, from the artist’s wife to five-year old son, Oisin. Anecdotes as brief as a sentence to compressed essays of intimacy and eloquence are presented alongside a career-spanning selection of paintings, drawings, photographs and pastels. This extraordinary volume, conceived in celebration of the artist’s 70th birthday, is edited and introduced by the poet and critic Kelly Grovier.

About the Author: Kelly Grovier is a poet and cultural critic. He is a columnist and feature writer for BBC Culture and his writings on art have appeared in The Times Literary Supplement, The Independent, The Sunday Times, The Observer, The RA Magazine, and Wired. Educated at the University of California, Los Angeles, and at the University of Oxford, he is co-founder of the international scholarly journal European Romantic Review and author of 100 Works of Art That Will Define Our Age (2013) and Art Since 1989 (2015), both published by Thames & Hudson. He was voted one of Alt Power 100 Artlyst 2018. Colm Tóibín is an Irish novelist, short story writer, playwright, poet, journalist and critic. Tóibín is currently Irene and Sidney B. Silverman Professor of the Humanities at Columbia University. Armin Zweite is the Director of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein Westfalen.
