From Seals to Software Agents: The Evolution, Architecture, and Future of Identity and Access Management explores how identity evolved from physical seals, signatures, and early computer accounts into one of the most important security control planes in modern enterprises.
This comprehensive reference connects the history of identity with the technologies, architectures, governance models, and operational practices that shape modern Identity and Access Management (IAM).
What You'll Discover
- The evolution of identity, from ancient methods of authentication to modern digital identities.
- The foundations of IAM, including identities, accounts, credentials, entitlements, and effective access.
- Directory services and the evolution from Windows NT domains to Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, and cloud identity.
- Identity lifecycle management, provisioning, SCIM, application integration, authorization, and identity governance.
- Authentication, multi-factor authentication, passkeys, federation, privileged access, and Zero Trust.
- Identity threats, attack paths, detection, incident response, resilience, and recovery.
- Cloud IAM, non-human identities, workload identity, customer identity, and AI agents.
- Enterprise IAM program development, architecture, automation, and professional career paths.
Whether you are entering cybersecurity, expanding your IAM expertise, designing enterprise identity architecture, reviewing security controls, or leading an identity modernization initiative, this book provides a connected understanding of the IAM landscape.
Through practical scenarios, architectural explanations, reference models, checklists, and self-assessment questions, readers gain a clearer understanding of how identity technologies work together—and why sound identity governance matters.
Understand the history. Connect the architecture. Prepare for the future of identity.
Written by Santhosh Sivarajan, an experienced cybersecurity and identity practitioner, published author, and longtime Microsoft MVP.
About This Book
Every workplace has its own people, processes, culture, technology, constraints, and way of solving problems. Some places and assignments felt routine or unremarkable. I sometimes wondered what I was learning or why certain experiences were necessary. Yet time teaches us that the value of an experience is not always visible while we are living through it.
Looking back, I can see that every environment had something distinctive to teach me. A technology decision, a successful project, a difficult migration, a good manager, a poor manager, an effective process, a flawed process, an unexpected question, or an unforeseen challenge could all become lessons. Some taught me what to do; others taught me what not to do. Over time, those lessons became part of the judgment, perspective, and experience I carried into the next assignment.
That accumulated experience eventually led me to write this book and shaped the book itself. It differs in tone and structure from my earlier books, which were more technical in nature. The subject remains deeply technical, but I wanted to connect the technology to the history, decisions, people, processes, and operating realities that shaped it.
Identity has a history, and so do the people who practice it. Perhaps with time, we begin to tell technical stories differently. Architecture and accuracy still matter, but so does understanding how we arrived here, what earlier generations of technology taught us, which mistakes are worth remembering, and which lessons are worth passing on. In that sense, this book is my professional version of “once upon a time.”
