From the Author
Central to this book are four films: R.A.F. (1935), Our Island Nation (1937), The Gap (1937) and The Lion Has Wings: An Epic of the Royal Air Force (1939). The bulk of this study of the British Air Ministry’s pre-1940 strategy of projecting the propaganda of British air power to a national and world-wide audience relates to The Lion Has Wings: An Epic of the Royal Air Force. The first feature film to be produced and released in Great Britain after the outbreak of the Second World War, The Lion Has Wings was a largely documentary movie rapidly and expertly crafted by London Films. The Daily Mail claimed that Alexander Korda had "made the most magnificent picture of the British spirit and of British courage that has ever been produced."
The Lion Has Wings proclaimed a democratic Britain shielded behind its unbeatable air force and anti-aircraft defenses. The film dramatically presented the Royal Air Force’s verge-of-war views on modern warfare, most of which failed to meet the test of combat. Incorporated in a vivid and exciting reconstruction of Bomber Command’s highly publicised Kiel raid of 4 September 1939, the film also preserved the only existent documentary footage of one of the R.A.F.’s sorties against the German navy that day .
Finally "Screening the Propaganda of British Air Power: From R.A.F. (1935) to The Lion Has Wings: An Epic of the Royal Air Force (1939)" documents the background, creation, message and international impact - short and long term - of this innovative film, while reconstructing the critically examining the R.A.F. Bomber Command operations of the first three days of the war. Included in the illustrated book is a detailed shooting script of The Lion Has Wings, as well as Mass-Observation’s contemporary report on the film’s reception.
Erratum The author and publishers have made every effort to make the information in this book as accurate and correct as possible. However, an error has occurred during the computerized printing process, and therefore, with the exception of page 7, all references to "German Air Service" should read as "Luftwaffe / German Air Force."
Page 7 (line 17) should read Sir Harald Peake. Page 45 (line 22) should read could. Page 75 (note 5) should read Nürnburg.
