Paperback. In the wake of a sheltered Midwestern upbringing, Johnathan Michaels enters the gritty world of business under the wing of Howard Weiss at Illinois Iron and Metal in Phoenix, Arizona. Initially naive from his years selling office machines, Johnathan is thrust into a seedy underworld where Howard's business practices stretch far beyond the moral confines of Johnathan's conservative upbringing. From money laundering to dealing with cars containing grisly surprises, Howard's ties with a Las Vegas mob introduce Johnathan to a world of danger and ethical ambiguity. Unfolding events reveal Howard's desperate maneuvers to keep his scrap yard afloat, including dubious deals and unsettling alliances. Johnathan finds himself entangled in a web of deceit, witnessing heists, insurance fraud, and mob confrontations that challenge his every belief. As tensions escalate, culminating in a violent attack on their office, Johnathan faces a pivotal choice between complicity and integrity. Howard's downfall at the Desert Housing Project marks a turning point, prompting Johnathan to reevaluate his path. Investing his savings into a sports bar, he navigates away from the shadows that once engulfed him. In a poignant conclusion, Johnathan emerges transformed, his journey illustrating the profound impact of moral reckoning and the quest for personal redemption amid the dark underbelly of business and crime.
