About this Item
Very rare wall map, restored, with original rods and modern linen backing, of this county in western Massachusetts, including Springfield and Holyoke. Varnish removed. Bright full color by town. 22 inset plans of towns and cities, including a large inset map of Springfield. The very decorative border contains 11 views, mostly of buildings, and 10 decorative vignettes, including a steamship, wild life, native Americans and Johnny Appleseed. Published by James D. Scott & Co. Scott in 1854 also published a map of Hampshire County. The title block indicates that this was lithographed by E. Herrlein, 116 Chestmut St., Philadelphia. Peters, America on Stone, notes an Edward Herline, with no mention of the address shown here. While it is likely that this was indeed the work of Herline, it would strain credibility to think that the lithographer would get both his own name and address wrong. This map is not to be confused with Henry F. Walling's 1855 Map of Hampden County, this map is exceedingly rare. OCLC records only one example, at the British Library (#557653245) Not in Boston Public Library Levanthal Collection or Library of Congress. Seller Inventory # m01196
