From the Back Cover
Professor Donaldson explains how the Scotland of today has been shaped throughout many centuries. He does it not by a narrative history but by a series of chapters on Anglo-Scottish relations, the monarchy, parliament, courts and administration, politics, the Highlands, the Church, economy and society. The story, beginning in the dim early centuries, is brought up to date with a review of current trends.
In this, the third edition, a chapter on 'The Last Twenty Years' relates to how traditional industries vanished and new projects failed to realise expectations. North Sea oil provided only limited compensation and some operations of the European Community were not beneficial. The policies of Conservative governments were blamed, but political reaction, while vocal, remained indecisive, for the possible advantages of independence were still debatable.
