Fine art, graphic design, underground comics...and zippos? The lines between art and commerceget fully rewired in this art opus documenting thehistory of FlameRite, the first commercial artiststo recognise the potential of the Zippo lighter ascanvas. Throw the cross-market appeal of Zippos inthe blender with over thirty genre-destroyingartists ranging in style from Robt. Williams toDaniel Clowes to Shag, and you have Scorched Art,more than just a collection, but a chronicle of aan art movement. In full-colour, the book featuresmany out-of-print and never-before-seen models.
Synopsis: More than just a collection of lighters, SCORCHED ART is the chronicle of a unique art movement that has as one of its hallmarks an affinity to products, graphic design and marketing - an arena heretofore scorned by the art establishment - and which, for more than a decade, has been at the edge of the visual underworld, with artists ranging in style from Robt. Williams to Daniel Clowes to Shag, producing over 1000 objets d'art that literally torch convention on all levels. From the early days of, a new art underground has been gathering steam - a combustible mix of independent comic books, rock posters, graffiti art, and the rediscovering of under-recognised artists from yesteryear's "Kustom Kulture". In this world of "Lowbrow" culture, the merchandise - trinkets, posters, decals - have become the art itself. FlameRite was and is at the forefront off this anti-elitist art world, recognising early on that the commerce of the art is the art. The fact that Zippos are really miniature billboards suited to hawking corporate logos only enhances their artistic merit, according to FlameRite aesthetic. Since 1994, FlameRite has produced 130 different Zippo designs that have hit the streets.
Some have only sold 50, while some designs go on to sell thousands. Including all rare and out of print models this volume features every FlameRite Zippo produced, and in addition, includes exclusive, never-before-seen art from 20 artists in the FlameRite line up.
