Item description from seller

First Dutton paperback edition of Anthony Standen's witty and provocative critique of scientific authority, originally published in hardcover in 1950. Standen, himself a scientist, challenges the tendency to treat scientists and scientific institutions as uniquely objective, rational, and immune from the intellectual weaknesses found in other professions. With humor rather than outright hostility, he examines the assumptions, habits, institutional culture, and occasional pretensions of scientists while questioning the idea that scientific training automatically produces superior reasoning or judgment. The book became a widely discussed mid-century critique of scientific culture and remains an interesting period contribution to debates concerning scientific authority, skepticism, scientific method, and the public perception of science. 221 pages. Condition: Good. Original illustrated Dutton paperback wrappers with cover design by Milton Glaser. Wrappers show age-toning, rubbing, scattered surface wear, and light edge and corner wear. Front wrapper has creasing at the upper right corner and additional light handling wear. Spine is toned with light rubbing and wear. Small handwritten ink notation appears on the top edge of the text block. Pages show expected age-toning but appear generally clean and well preserved in the pages examined. Binding remains sound. Please see photographs for full condition. Collector/Scholarly Appeal: An early paperback edition of a notable mid-century critique of scientific culture, with an appealing period cover designed by influential graphic designer Milton Glaser. Particularly suitable for collections in philosophy of science, sociology of science, scientific skepticism, history of science, and mid-century graphic design. Shipping/Returns: Carefully packed for shipment. Returns accepted in accordance with AbeBooks policies. SCI 3b.
