Item description from seller

The Definitive American Edition of a Classic on Legal Logic Ram, James [1793-1870]. Townshend, John [b.1819], Editor. The Science of Legal Judgment. A Treatise Designed to Show the Materials Whereof, And the Process by Which, Courts Construct Their Judgments; And Adapted to Practical and General Use in the Discussion and Determination of Questions of Law. With Extensive Additions and Annotations by John Townshend, Of the New York Bar. New York: Baker, Voorhis & Co., Law Publishers, 1871. 456 pp. Octavo (9" x 5-3/4"). Contemporary tan sheep with blind-stamped frames, raised bands, and contrasting red and black lettering pieces. The binding shows moderate rubbing to extremities, wear to spine ends, and nicks to the boards. Joints starting at ends; front hinge cracked but holding. Internally, pages show moderate toning and occasional light foxing. Features a distinguished provenance with the stamps of prominent Seattle bibliophile Benjamin A. Maslan and notable Philadelphia booksellers Rees, Welsh & Co. and Bourquin & Welsh. $500. * This 1871 edition is the "final and best" version of Ram's essential treatise on judicial reasoning. While first published in London in 1834, this New York edition is significantly enhanced by John Townshend's extensive American annotations and citations. The American Law Journal praised the work as "brief yet comprehensive," noting its "infinite research" into how courts actually construct judgments. This copy's history connects the legal world to literary history. It was previously held in the library of Benjamin A. Maslan (1901-1979), a famed Seattle attorney and collector. It also bears the stamp of Rees, Welsh & Co., the Philadelphia publishers who famously braved the Boston ban to publish Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass and Simon Greenleaf's landmark Treatise on the Law of Evidence. American Law Journal cited in Marvin, Legal Bibliography 597. This edition not in the Harvard Law Catalogue (1909) or Sweet & Maxwell.…
