The author, a German businessman, publishes a collection of letters written by his friend Jacob Schramm, who emigrated to North America in 1835. Through Schramm's detailed observations, readers travel alongside him, experiencing the hardships of the sea voyage, the bustle of New York City, and the stark beauty of the Hudson River region. The letters vividly portray the realities of emigration, including the challenges of navigating a new language and culture, the anxieties of adjusting to unfamiliar customs, and the allure of a life built on self-reliance and financial opportunity. Schramm's insights into American life provide a valuable window into a pivotal era of westward expansion and cultural exchange, underscoring the complex motivations and experiences of those who sought a new life across the Atlantic. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. …

Meanwhile, at the age of twenty-six, he made up his mind to marry. During his business travels some time before, he had come to know a girl, poor, to be sure, but of very good character, and industrious; his choice fell upon her, and she accepted him. When he told his father of this choice, the latter grew so angry about it that he threatened to disinherit his son, for she was not in keeping with his ideas or his wishes. Both were determined to have their way. From that time on Jacob S entertained the thought of buying property in the United States on the strength of several thousand thaler which he had saved, of marrying the girl of his choice against his father's wishes, of leaving Germany, and of realizing under America's sky his hopes - domestic happiness and self-respect ing independence.
