Item description from seller

First Wilmington Printing. 100% Textually complete. Dilworth, Thomas. The Schoolmasters Assistant: Being a Compendium of Arithmetic, Both Practical and Theoretical. Wilmington [Del.]: Printed and sold by Andrews, Craig, and Brynberg, 1791 (M,DCC,XCI). Hardcover 16mo in original full sheepskin leather. Early American edition. An exceptionally scarce survivor of early Delaware printing history. Unlike most surviving 18th-century schoolbooks which suffer from missing pages, this copy is completely intact and includes the fragile, large original fold-out plate titled "Of Converging Series: Or, A Table of Powers & Roots of all Powers" opposite page 131. Original leather boards are scuffed, rubbed, and chipped at the edges. Internal hinges remain largely tight and holding with the exception of a loose signature section spanning page is 37 through 48 which is pulled starting at the gutter. Pages are intact but show extensive handling wear, heavy creasing, wrinkling, and typical age-toning and damp staining throughout. Provenance/Marginalia: Endpapers and prelims feature extensive, fascinating contemporary ink ownership signatures, inscriptions, poetry, drawings and penmanship practice, including an elegant cursive inscription on the final flyleaf that reads: "Polly Cummings Book at John Woodmans School, in the Year of Our Lord, One Thousand Seven Hundred & Ninety nine: October 17th" Directly below it, a poignant poetic rhyme is inscribed: "The rose is red, the Grass is green, The time is past that I have seen Mary Cummings Oct[ober] Seventeenth" These features provide a fantastic, traceable genealogical and social history context to this specific copy. A rare and completely intact text specimen of a complete scarce 18th-century Delaware textbook, ideal for restoration or early Americana reference.
