"School Acres, an Adventure in Rural Education" is an insightful and pioneering account of the Penn School on St. Helena Island, South Carolina. Written by Rossa B. Cooley, who served as the school's principal for decades, this work details the transformative power of education within a rural African American community. Through vivid narratives and historical reflection, the book explores how the Penn School integrated academic learning with practical agricultural and community development, fostering self-reliance and social progress among the Gullah people.

The narrative captures the unique adventure of tailoring educational methods to the specific needs of a rural, sea-island environment. Cooley illustrates the challenges and triumphs of teaching modern farming techniques, home economics, and health while respecting and preserving the rich cultural heritage of the island's inhabitants. More than just a pedagogical study, "School Acres, an Adventure in Rural Education" serves as a vital historical document of the early 20th-century movement for racial uplift and educational reform in the American South. This book remains a significant resource for those interested in the history of education, African American studies, and the enduring legacy of the Penn School experiment.
