About this Item

Description:

Schism Dis-Arm d of The Defensive Weapons, Lent It By Doctor Hammond, and the Bishop of Derry, By S.W. By M. Blageart, At Paris, 1655, 333 pp, full original double ruled leather, 6 x 4 , 18mo. In fair condition. Front board detached. Moderate to heavy wear along edges and corners. Corners rubbed and lightly crushed. Leather desiccated overall with numerous abrasions and areas of red rot at edges. Rear board afflicted with dryness along edges and old ink staining at bottom corners. Spine nearly perished and splitting down center. Ruling has mostly rubbed away from spine. Ends chipped and prone to flaking. Leather has darkened significantly over time as per the the original state of the leather at the pastedowns which is much lighter and softer. Front fly toned at edges and detached. End papers in front and rear are quite toned at edges. Inscription in old hand on the second end paper. For my honnord & best friend, Master John Bulteel (c.1627-1692). More on this provenance below. Evidence of French watermarks in the shape of a crown at the inscription leaf right edge when held to light. Internally good with light toning and minor instances of foxing. Errata leaf quite dark at edges. Binding remains intact, albeit fragile. Signature 115-126pp are loosening from the text. Please see photos. Very scarce. Possibly inscribed by the author John Sergeant (1621-1707 or 1710) an English Roman Catholic priest, controversialist and theologian. He was reportedly quite difficult to work with, saying and writing many things that offended even his co-religionists. He was a voluminous writer, leaving over fifty works, either published or manuscript. This is his most known work. The inscription is to John Bulteel (c.1627-1692) an English writer and translator, cousin of John Buteel, Member of Parliament. He was descended from French Huguenots and wrote and translated works on history and theology. Seller Inventory # RAREF1655FOQX
