Numbering written in white letters over black paint on lower spine. Small inkstamp on front pastedown. Front and rear endpapers and touching pages lightly browned. Rear hinge cracked but binding is still intact and reasonably tight. All in all, an internally clean copy. Wagner-Camp-Becker descibe Cooke and this work as follows: "Cooke's career in the west began in 1829, with his tour as a lieutenant in the military escort commanded by Major Bennet Riley to guard the Santa Fe traders from depredations. In 1831, he was stationed at Fort Atkinson on the Missouri. In 1845, he set out from Fort Leavenworth (with a command) to escort emigrants bound for Oregon and he returned to Fort Leavenworth by way of Bent's Fort in the latter part of August, when the book ends." Field notes that "The author was personally engaged in several battles with the Camanches (sic) and the Sacs and Foxes, and nearly half his volume is composed of narrations of events connected with Indian warfare." His extensive writings, including Scenes and Adventures, have remained particularly valuable for understanding the role the army played in the U.S. expansion during the era of Manifest Destiny. Cooke would later receive recognition as a cavalry expert with the publication of his Cavalry Tactics which became the army's standard manual on the subject. Wagner-Camp-Becker 288:1.
