Print on Demand. This book explores the fascinating world of computer vision, a field that aims to imbue machines with the ability to "see" and understand the world around them. Building upon earlier work in picture processing and pattern recognition, the author delves into the intricate process of "scene analysis," which seeks to interpret two-dimensional images of three-dimensional environments, much like how humans perceive the world. The book examines various approaches to this complex task, including methods that analyze straight lines and their intersections, as well as those that focus on merging adjacent regions of similar visual properties. Through a detailed analysis of these techniques, the author reveals the profound interplay between geometric principles and semantic understanding that underpins computer vision. The book offers a unique perspective on the challenges and possibilities of building truly intelligent visual systems, highlighting the potential of this field to revolutionize our interaction with machines. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Geometry
Many of the techniques discussed appear superficially to differ greatly from each other. A deeper analysis in terms of projective geometry, however, often points out implicit exploitation of similar phenomena. This underlying connection is not often discussed in the literature but will be brought out to unify description of techniques in this chapter and suggest fruitful areas for new research in the next.
